Yuha Basin Oyster Beds, Dec. 10, 2011

posted Dec 16, 2011, 12:16 PM by ShadowMountain Gem&MineralSociety

After 20 or so years, it was difficult for me to find the right hills.

I was trying to make an old AAA Imperial County map agree with all the new Bureau of Land Management numbered routes.  We made a couple of false starts and had to turn around.  The day was fast disappearing when Kenny Irwin and Don Donley scouted out a wash to see if it was passable for Allen Valley’s long bed pickup.  Not only was it passable, but it was a BLM Route which led us to our destination!!

We all found shells of various varieties, and lots of pieces of large oyster shells.  Several whole shells were found.  Some of us even found petrified wood!

Our group of 10 could only search a small portion of this vast area in the limited time we had. Now that we know how to find the place, I hope we will have another trip, possibly in the spring.
