Ocotillo Wells, Jan. 29, 2013

After several days of rain and wind, we were blest with an absolutely beautiful day!

There were 23 of us in 9 four wheel drive vehicles!  The most people and the most vehicles we’ve had for quite some time.  The wonderful rain left the sand damp, which made the driving very easy; however there was one small delay getting Max Jones’ vehicle off of high center. Thankfully, the rest of the driving produced no problems.

We were stopped on an existing trail when the State Park Ranger came and told us that the rules are changing.  In two years we will be limited to DESIGNATED routes in the Ocotillo Wells RV area where we find the petrified wood!  For now, the Rangers are only warning people, but after two years, they will be giving TICKETS and FINES!  Looks like we will have to be walking for some distances to collect anything in that area!

We searched in 3 different areas and found lots of nice wood and sandstone concretions, and after several hours, tired and happy, the crowd voted to go for ice cream at the Travertine Grill.  We were surprised to learn that it is now an Italian Restaurant and Sports Bar with new owners, new name(?), and new menu.  At least they still have a small variety of ice cream.
